This 4th of July weekend we’re celebrating one of Atelier Viollet’s most prestigious projects: a custom display case for the original 1765 Stamp Act.
In October 2011 Atelier Viollet—in collaboration with our colleagues at Studio Dell’ Arte—received a commission from the New York Historical Society to make a custom display case for the original 1765 Stamp Act that led to the American revolution. The Museum was in a bind and needed the case to be fabricated and installed in just under three weeks.
We were instructed that the case needed to incorporate numerous security features that were outlined by the British Parliament. In addition, the chamber that stored the fragile document was to be airtight and fabricated using specially selected inert materials.
This was the first time the historic stamp act was to leave the UK. Read more about the history of the Stamp Act.
