Atelier Viollet was commissioned by Brian J. McCarthy, Inc. to reproduce two lacquered tables for a recent residential project. The originals were fabricated in the early 20th century by innovative Irish designer and architect, Eileen Gray, who reintroduced lacquerwork to Paris with her unique cabinets, tables, and screens. A survey of her vast body of work was exhibited earlier this year at the Bard Graduate Center in New York, which featured many iconic pieces as well as architectural plans and models. The two tables demonstrate lacquer’s timeless sophistication and dynamic range in possibility, as seen with the contrast between their smooth tops and textured legs. Regardless of surface, lacquer is an elegant material that we are proud to work with and explore.
