Shop Drawings

June 13, 2013

Before any fabrication work begins at Atelier Viollet we take the time to put together a full set of shop drawings. This is an important aspect of our process as it gives us the opportunity to develop all the construction and design details on paper. We are also able to incorporate the functional and decorative hardware into the drawings. A lot of work goes into our drawings as problems solved during this time make the building process run smoothly and efficiently.

Not too many years ago all of our shop drawings were created by hand. There is a certain romance in a pencil drawing that cannot be replaced by the computer drawings that we now provide. However, setting that romance aside the benefits of computer drawings are easy to see. Most importantly the ability to make dimension changes easily, or to offer multiple options for details and layouts.

Another of the benefits of computerized drawing is the option of rendering a piece in a 3D environment. Although this is not always necessary, we are able to offer this option should the need arise.

Atelier Viollet’s gypsum cabinet was recently featured in a special spring 2013 supplemental issue of New York Spaces magazine entitled The Goods. The cabinet, also featured on The World Interior Design Network, is constructed with gypsum, ebonized pearwood featuring a satin-laquer finish, and silvered bronze. Read more about our gypsum and mica furniture at our website.

Atelier Viollet recently embarked on an endeavor to cover an entire room in straw marquetry panelling for a client. The project, involving more than 300 sq. ft. of surface area, took over 1500 hours to complete. The process included initial shop drawings, samples development, fabrication and installation. We also provided and installed the custom grille and trim in bronze. The straw itself received a custom color, which you can see in the photos below.

Sometimes the perfect piece of hardware, be it functional or decorative, does not exist in any catalogue or on any shelf. In these instances Atelier Viollet is often able to develop and create custom hardware.

We either do this in our onsite metal shop, or we work very closely with our trusted local metalworking colleagues.

Be it a bronze with just the right patina, or a nickel with a lush satin sheen, our craftsman take just as much care and pride in making our custom hardware as they do in creating the pieces they will adorn.
